Yes. All our physicians have staff privileges at the Gwinnett Medical Center. Depending on your diagnosis, you may see one of the other partners in conjunction with your primary cardiologist.
In addition to your question, it can be helpful to go over the cardiac catheterization procedure, so you will know what to expect:
Our doctors will perform your cardiac catheterization in 30 minutes–2 hours. A local anesthetic is first given at the catheter insertion location, usually your wrist or groin. Imaging will help your doctor thread the catheter through your blood vessels and into your heart. Tests may include heart chamber pressure monitoring, contrast dye blood flow injections, or tissue samples. If blocked arteries are found, your doctor may conduct an angioplasty and place stents. Sedation will keep you comfortable during the procedure. After the catheter is withdrawn, pressure is applied to stop bleeding, and you’ll be monitored for a few hours before likely being discharged the same day.
Cardiovascular catheterization has risks like any medical procedure. These include bleeding or bruising at the insertion site, infection, contrast dye allergies, blood vessel injury, and, rarely, a heart attack or stroke. There’s also some minimal exposure to X-ray radiation. Your CVG healthcare team will address and mitigate these risks.
We will monitor you after catheterization. Your doctor may advise 24 hours without driving or vigorous exercise. You may be given medicine to relieve pain or prevent complications. It’s important to keep the catheter insertion site clean and dry and check for infection. A follow-up appointment may include more tests to assess healing. Most patients can return to normal routines within a few days to a week, depending on their situation.
